As a young child, he moved with his family to The Bronx, New York, where he grew up with a strong work ethic, determination, and an easygoing manner that endeared him to friends and classmates. In 1985, Henry enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a long and respected career that would span nearly two decades. His Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was 19D30 Cavalry Scout, a role that placed him at the forefront of reconnaissance and security operations. His assignments included service in the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, New York Army National Guard, where he developed a reputation as a disciplined and reliable Soldier whose experience and calm under pressure provided strength and confidence to those he led.

Outside of uniform, Henry built a life grounded in family and community. He met his future wife, Jessica, in New York, and their relationship quickly became a lifelong partnership. They eventually settled in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1997, seeking opportunity and stability for their expanding family. Together they raised four children, and Henry also embraced the role of stepfather, nurturing each child with love, attentiveness, and devotion. Family members recall his warmth, sense of humor, and deep pride in his role as husband and father — roles he cherished as much as his service to country.

Throughout his military career, Staff Sgt. Irizarry served with dedication during peacetime and conflict. His unit undertook reconnaissance and patrol missions that were essential to broader operational goals in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where his leadership, tactical skill, and concern for the welfare of his fellow Soldiers were evident to all who served alongside him.

On December 3, 2004, while conducting a patrol mission in Taji, Iraq, United States Army Staff Sgt. Henry E. Irizarry’s vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) that detonated near his Humvee. In the attack, Henry lost his life while serving — a profound loss felt deeply by his family, his unit, and the communities connected to his life’s journey. He was 38 years old.

News accounts at the time noted that he had written his wife from Iraq, expressing hope for a Christmas visit home before he was due to return from deployment. His passing was publicly mourned by local officials, including statements that highlighted both the personal and national impact of his sacrifice.

Staff Sgt. Irizarry’s life was honored widely — from memorials held in his community to official remembrances in state publications recognizing Connecticut’s fallen service members. His story is included among those commemorated in Connecticut’s State Register and Manual, honoring his contributions and sacrifice alongside other Connecticut veterans.

More than his military record, Henry is remembered for his devotion as a husband and father, his generosity, his friendships formed over years of service, and his presence in church and community life that brought comfort and joy to those around him. His legacy of love, bravery, and service continues to be celebrated by family, friends, and fellow servicemembers.
