United States Marine Corps Service

Shortly after high school, Ahn enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, motivated by a desire to serve the nation that had welcomed his family and provided opportunity for a new future. He successfully completed recruit training, earning the title of United States Marine, and advanced to the rank of Corporal.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Within his unit, Ahn was regarded as disciplined, reliable, and selfless—a Marine who placed the mission and the safety of his fellow Marines above all else.

Deployment and Sacrifice

In 2003, Corporal Chanawongse deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, part of the initial invasion phase of the conflict. His unit operated in and around An Nasiriyah, a strategically critical area marked by intense combat conditions.

On March 23, 2003, while engaged in operations to secure a bridge near An Nasiriyah, Corporal Chanawongse’s unit was ambushed by enemy forces. During that engagement, he lost his life while serving, alongside several fellow Marines. He was 22 years old.

Legacy and Remembrance

Ahn’s sacrifice resonated deeply throughout Waterford, across Connecticut, and among those who served beside him. His mother and stepfather, Tan and Paul Patchem, were surrounded by a community united in remembrance and respect.

He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, where his grandfather attended the ceremony wearing his Royal Thai Air Force uniform, a powerful and symbolic testament to a family legacy of service spanning nations and generations.

To ensure his life and values continue to inspire others, Waterford High School established a scholarship in his name, honoring his character, dedication, and commitment to service. Through this lasting tribute, Ahn’s story continues to guide future generations.
