United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Philip A. Johnson – Enfield, Connecticut

Philip Alexander Johnson was born April 29, 1987, in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Enfield alongside his sister Jessica Titus. From a young age, Philip knew he wanted to be a Marine. At age 11, he joined the Westover Young Marines, a youth education and service program where he quickly became a standout member — eventually earning the rank of Staff Sergeant and serving as a mentor and role model for younger participants. His parents, Louis (Lou) and Kathy Johnson, and friends saw in him an early dedication to community, discipline, and leadership that set the course for his future.

At Enfield High School, where he graduated in 2005, Philip was known not only for his academic focus but also for his involvement in music and the arts. He participated in Voices Incorporated, a choral program that brought together students from across the Enfield schools, and enjoyed playing several instruments, including saxophone, drums, keyboards, and bass guitar. His musical interests were wide, and he often spoke of his admiration for musicians such as Paul McCartney, whom he saw in concert during his youth.

Shortly after graduation, Philip answered his lifelong calling by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. In August 2005, he departed for Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, successfully completing recruit training. During boot camp, he demonstrated leadership and excellence, serving as Squad Leader and Platoon Guide, and graduated on October 17, 2005, with the rank of Private First Class. Soon after, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, a testament to his commitment and capability as a Marine.

Assigned to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Johnson deployed to Iraq in July 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His unit operated in and around Habbaniyah, a strategically important region where Marines conducted patrols, security missions, and stability operations amid persistent threats from enemy forces.

On September 3, 2006, while conducting combat operations, Johnson was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) triggered by an Iraqi teenager — a tragic loss that resonated deeply throughout his community. He was 19 years old at the time of his death, having given his life in service to his country.

Lance Cpl. Johnson’s military awards reflect his service and sacrifice. They include the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His leadership, dedication, and willingness to serve at such a young age spoke to his character and the impact he had on those around him.

Philip’s death deeply affected his family and the community of Enfield. In May 2011, the park adjacent to the Mark Twain Congregate Housing Center on South Road was rededicated as the Veterans Memorial Athletic Complex, with the two baseball fields renamed Johnson Field and Jordan Field in honor of Philip Johnson and Gunnery Sgt. Phillip A. Jordan, another Marine from Enfield who gave his life in service. Family members and community leaders gathered for the dedication, symbolizing how their sacrifices continue to guide future generations.

Philip Johnson’s funeral brought together family, friends, Marines, and community members. Hundreds lined the streets of Enfield in tribute and respect as the procession passed, and flags flew at half‑staff in recognition of his service and sacrifice. His legacy continues through the lives he touched, the traditions of service he upheld, and the memorials that ensure he will never be forgotten.
