Today, November 23, we remember Sergeant Major Phillip R. Albert, U.S. Army, on the anniversary of his tragic death in 2003. Phillip’s life was cut short on this day, when he was killed in an Air Force helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Born in Southington, Connecticut, in 1962, Phillip grew up in the Terryville section of Plymouth. As the youngest of eight children, he was deeply influenced by his family, including his father, Walter R. Albert, a Vietnam-era Army veteran. Phillip’s commitment to service began early; at 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and dedicated 22 years to a distinguished military career.

Throughout his service, Sgt. Maj. Albert’s bravery was evident. He served in the Gulf War in 1991 and was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division, stationed at Fort Drum, New York. His courage was recognized with numerous awards, including two Bronze Star Medals and the Purple Heart.

On November 23, 2003, Sgt. Maj. Albert was aboard an MH-53 Pave Low helicopter conducting a combat operation near Bagram Air Base when the aircraft crashed due to mechanical failure. Despite the dangerous conditions, Albert made several heroic attempts to rescue his fellow soldiers from the wreckage. His actions, which included trying to save others from a burning helicopter, earned him a posthumous Bronze Star.

Phillip is survived by his mother, Germaine Deschaine Albert; his siblings Camille Albert, Donald and Jocelyn Albert, Richard Albert, Joan Vallee, Nancy and Thomas Rama, Rinette and Emile Pelletier, and Judy and Lucien Lebel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. His funeral service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol, Connecticut, was a moving tribute to his service and sacrifice.

Sgt. Maj. Albert was later buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, alongside other fallen heroes from the crash. His bravery and dedication continue to inspire those who learn of his extraordinary life.

As we mark the anniversary of Phillip R. Albert’s passing, let us reflect on his unwavering commitment and the profound impact of his sacrifice. His legacy of valor and selflessness serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve. May his memory continue to inspire and uplift us all.
