
On December 2, 2023, Alfred O. “Smokey” Dreher Jr. peacefully reunited with his beloved wife, Diane, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, dedication, and compassion.
Born on August 14, 1934, in Rockville, CT, Alfred lived a life marked by extraordinary commitment to his community and country. A graduate of Rockville High School in 1953, he answered the call to serve by joining the U.S. Army in 1955, where he excelled as a Heavy Equipment Transport Driver. After completing his military service, Alfred transitioned into civilian life, building a remarkable 40-year career at Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Company.
Alfred’s true passion, however, was his lifelong dedication to firefighting and emergency medical services. His journey began as a Junior Firefighter in 1948, setting the stage for decades of service with the Town of Vernon Fire Department. Throughout his career, Alfred embraced numerous roles, including Hoseman, Ladderman, and Driver. His pioneering spirit shone brightly as one of the department’s first EMTs, contributing significantly to the Rescue 441 unit as a Driver and Paramedic, where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
A graduate of The University of Hartford, Alfred further extended his reach by becoming a certified First Aid and CPR instructor with the American Red Cross. He was also a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon, where he faithfully served in various capacities for over five decades.
In retirement, Alfred’s commitment to helping others remained unwavering. He volunteered with organizations such as the American Legion Post 14 and Meals on Wheels, embodying his enduring spirit of service. Beyond his professional and volunteer endeavors, Alfred was an avid sports enthusiast who relished cheering on the Boston Red Sox, New York Giants, and Hartford Whalers. His love for auto racing further highlighted his zest for life and community engagement.
Alfred’s legacy is one of tireless service, profound compassion, and unshakable dedication. He enriched the lives of those around him, leaving an indelible mark on his family, friends, and countless others. His memory serves as an enduring inspiration, a testament to the power of a life lived selflessly and with purpose.
In honoring Alfred’s memory, contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 14 or Protectors of Animals, reflecting his lifelong devotion to service and care for others.
