A Life of Service
Staff Sergeant Lawrence J. Chiucarello, Sr., born on April 27, 1922, in Waterbury, CT, dedicated his life to service both during and after his military career. He passed away peacefully on April 20, 2017, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family.
Larry, as he was fondly known, graduated from Leavenworth High School in the Class of 1941. His journey of service began when he joined the U.S. Army and shipped out to the European Theatre on June 6, 1943. Upon arriving in Casablanca on June 13, he followed the 2nd Armor Division to Sicily and later joined the 19th Combat Engineer Regiment in Italy. As a Combat Engineer, Larry spent two years clearing minefields and building Bailey bridges, supporting the 5th Army’s advance from Rome to the Arno and the Apennines.
Post-War Contributions
After the war, Larry continued to serve his community in numerous ways. He worked as a Glazier for the City of Waterbury until his retirement. Post-retirement, Larry dedicated over 9,000 hours volunteering at Saint Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department. His commitment to community service extended to Sacred Heart Church, where he was an active member involved in the Board of Finance, Holy Name Society, and various church committees. Larry also participated in the Waterbury Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and VFW Post #7330. Sunday breakfasts with his family at Paisano’s were among his cherished traditions.
Larry is survived by his children, Lawrence J. Chiucarello, Jr. of Terryville, Edward Chiucarello and his wife Alexis of Rocky Hill, Alice Bonnie of Stoneham, MA, and Ann Ferraro and her husband Jay of Waterbury. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Marie (Giordano) Chiucarello, grandsons Christopher and Nicholas, brother Albert, and sister Josephine Santa Maria.
The Ceremony
The tribute will begin with the retirement of the honor flag of Rufus Stillman, another World War II U.S. Army veteran.
