CPL Kemaphoom “Ahn” Chanawongse is remembered today on his birthday and every day. His service is eternally honored.
Today, we gather to honor and remember the life and service of Corporal Kemaphoom A. “Ahn” Chanawongse, a courageous Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ahn was born and raised in the peaceful town of Waterford, Connecticut, where he nurtured dreams that would eventually lead him far from home—to the sands of Iraq and into the pages of history.
At just 22 years old, Cpl. Chanawongse was part of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His commitment to service was unwavering, his dedication to his fellow Marines unquestionable. On March 23, 2003, during intense operations on the outskirts of Nasiriyah, Iraq, Ahn’s unit was engaged in a fierce battle against a determined enemy. In a heroic effort to support his comrades, Ahn was running to retrieve ammunition when he was tragically struck down by an enemy round.
Cpl. Chanawongse’s bravery and selflessness exemplify the highest ideals of the Marine Corps and the United States Armed Forces. His loss was not just a personal tragedy for his family and friends, but a profound loss for the community of Waterford, and indeed, the nation. The grief felt at his passing is matched only by our deep gratitude for his service. Ahn’s actions in those final moments spoke to a character forged by a lifetime of kindness, courage, and love for his country.
As we reflect on his life, let us remember the joy he brought to those who knew him, the inspiration he provides to fellow Marines, and the enduring legacy of his service. Cpl. Kemaphoom A. Chanawongse will forever be remembered as one of our nation’s finest, a young man who gave everything he had to the country he loved.
We salute Cpl. Chanawongse. His memory and spirit will continue to guide us. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his family find comfort in the nation’s enduring respect and gratitude for Ahn’s valiant service and sacrifice.
