As we approach R.E.D. (Remember Everyone Deployed) Friday on February 2, 2024, it is crucial to update our Connecticut Veterans Bulletin readers on the current situation of our deployed service members in the Middle East.

Ongoing Presence in Syria and Iraq

Despite the official conclusion of their original mission, approximately 900 US troops remain stationed in Syria, actively supporting the international coalition against the “Islamic State” (IS). The al-Tanf base, near the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian borders, serves as a vital hub for counter-IS operations and negotiations on Syria’s future.

Recent events have intensified regional tensions, with Iranian-backed militants launching over 150 attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria over the past four months. The attack drone incident near the al-Tanf base resulted in the tragic loss of three US soldiers and injuries to 30 others.

Jordan’s Role and Balancing Act

Notably, Tower 22, a logistics support base where the attack occurred, is situated in Jordan. The Jordanian government has faced the delicate task of managing its citizens’ opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza while maintaining a cooperative relationship with the US and Israel. Around 3,000 US troops are currently stationed in Jordan, contributing to border security and utilizing Jordanian air bases.

Iraq: Evolving Mission

In Iraq, approximately 2,500 US troops continue their role in the international coalition against IS. While the focus has shifted beyond the anti-IS mission, the US presence provides essential support, including training, reconnaissance, aerial support, and intelligence sharing. Attacks against US troops by Iran-backed militias have increased, prompting discussions about the potential departure of remaining US soldiers.

Strategic Presence in Gulf States

Major US troop deployments extend to smaller Gulf states like Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, hosting over 30,000 American military personnel. Kuwait, strategically significant for its location, has the fourth-largest US troop presence globally. Qatar’s al-Udeid Air Base, with around 10,000 US personnel, plays a crucial role in regional operations. Bahrain, hosting the US 5th Fleet and over 9,000 military personnel, holds a central position in international maritime security.

As we honor R.E.D. Friday, let us stand united in our unwavering support for our deployed service members, recognizing their commitment in complex geopolitical landscapes.
