
In the heart of Wallingford, Connecticut, the legacy of General Joseph T. Wojtasik (CT, Retired Army) lives on, a testament to a life filled with honor, dedication, and unwavering commitment to service. Born on November 30, 1946, in Middletown, he was the son of the late Colonel Theodore Wojtasik and Mary Wojtasik. After a brief battle with cancer, General Wojtasik passed away on February 22, 2022, at the age of 75. He was a devoted husband to Ruth Kurtz Wojtasik for 45 years and a cherished father and grandfather.
Joseph’s journey began at Lyman Hall High School, from which he graduated in 1964. He pursued higher education at Saint Leo University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1968, thanks to a full varsity basketball scholarship. After graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1970, he began a distinguished military career that spanned 36 years. He was recognized as a leader early on, eventually being inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.
Joseph enlisted as a private in the Connecticut Army National Guard and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as a Rifle Company Commander with Co B, 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry, and later became the Training Officer for the 2nd Battalion 102nd Infantry. His leadership continued as he held the position of Executive Officer with the 43rd Infantry Brigade and commanded the 242nd Combat Engineer Battalion. He ultimately retired as a Colonel, having held the significant roles of Director of Logistics and Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics until 2004. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was later promoted to Brigadier General.
Throughout his military career, General Wojtasik was decorated with numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Bronze Star, reflecting his extraordinary contributions to the Army and the State of Connecticut. He was also a life member of various military organizations, including the American Legion and the Military Officers Association of America.
Outside of his military achievements, Joseph cherished spending time with his family. He enjoyed his trips to Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he indulged in kayaking, savoring fresh lobster, and exploring local shops. He took great joy in watching his grandchildren participate in their school and sporting events, sharing in their accomplishments with pride. A passionate sports fan, he cheered for his beloved New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Arkansas Razorbacks.
Joseph T. Wojtasik’s passing left a profound impact on his family and community. His contributions as a soldier, father, brother, and friend were celebrated during a Mass of Christian Burial at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford. A graveside service with military honors was held at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, where he was laid to rest among fellow heroes.
Joseph will always be remembered for his strength, kindness, and unwavering dedication to both his country and his loved ones. His legacy as a caring father, a devoted husband, and a loyal friend will continue to inspire those who knew him. In honor of his memory, contributions can be made to Soldiers and Angels, ensuring his spirit of service endures in the hearts of many.
