George R. Haddad, a cherished educator, dedicated U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2023, at the age of 99. His passing marked the end of a remarkable journey, one defined by unwavering service, commitment to education, and a deep love for his family and community.

Born on January 30, 1924, in Torrington, George was the son of the late Kaleel and Delia (Solomon) Haddad. Raised in both Torrington and Waterbury, he graduated from Crosby High School in 1942. Shortly thereafter, George joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving with distinction during World War II. He was deployed to Pearl Harbor immediately following the attacks in 1941, a pivotal moment that shaped his generation’s sense of duty and sacrifice.

After his military service, George pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from the New Haven State Teachers College and later a Master’s Degree from the University of Connecticut. His commitment to learning continued throughout his life, culminating in the attainment of a 6-year teaching certificate and numerous advanced degrees and certifications. Over the course of his 56-year career, George’s passion for teaching and his dedication to his students were evident in every classroom he entered.

George began his teaching career in 1951 at Merriman School and later became the Mathematics Department Head at Wilby High School, retiring in 1992. He also devoted years to the Waterbury Adult Education Program, continuing to share his knowledge with adult learners until his retirement at 83. Known for his caring approach, George believed in putting students first and always took the time to listen to their needs and aspirations. His legacy as one of the longest-serving educators in the state lives on through the countless students whose lives he touched. Additionally, George shared his expertise as a driver’s education instructor at Wilby.

In his personal life, George was known for his generosity and commitment to community. He was a lifetime member of both the VFW and the American Legion, as well as an active participant in the National Education Association and the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut. His philanthropic spirit extended to various educational and religious organizations, and he was a steadfast supporter of the UCONN Women’s Basketball team, showing his dedication to both academics and athletics.

George is survived by his son, Chuck Haddad, and his wife, Carol, of Southington, as well as his brother-in-law, Robert Peters, and several generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Georgette (Peters) Haddad, and his siblings, Ameen, Fred, Nicholas, and Wyhibe Haddad, and his sister, Julie Aucella. He also mourned the loss of his daughter-in-law, Sally Haddad.

The Haddad family extends heartfelt thanks to those who cared for George in his later years, including Beth DeMaria, Josie Zarate, Tony Zarate, and Marilyn. Their compassion, along with the exceptional care provided by the ER team at UCONN Hospital and the dedicated hospice staff at AccentCare, offered George comfort during his final days. The family also expresses deep gratitude to Rich Monteiro, his family, and the staff at Monteiro’s Restaurant, whose warm hospitality and consistent support brought George much joy.

George’s funeral service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2023, beginning with a procession from Maiorano Funeral Home to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, followed by a Mass. His burial with full military honors took place at Calvary Cemetery. The family invites those wishing to honor George’s memory to consider making a contribution to Southern Connecticut State University, where his legacy in education continues.

Through his devotion to teaching, service to his country, and commitment to his community, George R. Haddad leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come. His life is a testament to the enduring impact one individual can have on others, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
