Amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East, US forces have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to safeguarding international waters and protecting vital maritime interests. In a recent series of self-defense airstrikes launched on Saturday, February 17, 2024, US forces targeted Houthi rebel positions in Yemen, neutralizing threats posed by anti-ship missile batteries and unmanned maritime vessels.

Of particular significance was the destruction of a Houthi underwater drone, marking the first observed deployment of such technology by the rebels. These decisive actions, conducted by US Central Command (CENTCOM), underscore the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and ensuring the safety of US Navy ships and merchant vessels operating in the region.

The operations in the Red Sea and near Yemen come in response to continued provocations by Iran-backed Houthis, who have persistently harassed international shipping and targeted US Navy ships in recent months. Just three weeks prior to the airstrikes, a US Coast Guard ship intercepted a vessel in the Arabian Sea, seizing a cache of advanced conventional weapons destined for Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

The interception, conducted by the Sentinel-class fast-response cutter USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr., yielded over 200 packages of weaponry, including medium-range ballistic missile components, explosives, and military-grade communication equipment. These actions not only disrupt the flow of lethal aid to hostile actors but also serve to bolster maritime security and stability in the region.

As we reflect on the selfless service of our deployed service members, let us express our deepest gratitude for their dedication and sacrifice. Their tireless efforts to uphold peace and security amidst challenging circumstances serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all. In honoring their commitment, we stand united in support of our brave men and women in uniform, whose valor knows no bounds

Sailing with Honor: USS John L. Canley Commissioned in Tribute to Heroism

In a stirring ceremony that echoed with the valor and sacrifice of a true American hero, the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS John L. Canley on a memorable day in San Diego. The 784-foot-long vessel, now the fourth Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary mobile base (ESB 6), embodies the indomitable spirit of Sgt. Maj. John Canley, a distinguished Marine Corps veteran who received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary acts of courage during the Vietnam War in 1968.

The commissioning ceremony, a time-honored tradition dating back to 1775, marked a significant milestone in the life of the USS John L. Canley, bringing the “ship to life” amidst a backdrop of profound reverence and gratitude. Former President Donald Trump bestowed the Medal of Honor upon Sgt. Maj. Canley during a White House ceremony on October 17, 2018, commemorating his heroic actions 50 years after the Battle of Hué.

Sgt. Maj. Canley’s journey of service and sacrifice began in Caledonia, Arkansas, on December 20, 1937. Enlisting in the Marine Corps at the tender age of fifteen in 1953, he embarked on a remarkable career marked by unparalleled integrity and devotion to duty. Serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines during three combat tours in Vietnam, Sgt. Maj. Canley distinguished himself as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Company Gunnery Sergeant, and Company First Sergeant.

During the harrowing Battle of Hué, Sgt. Maj. Canley’s leadership and valor shone brightly as he led his company through a relentless onslaught of enemy attacks. Displaying exceptional bravery, he repeatedly risked his own life to save the lives of his fellow Marines, carrying wounded comrades to safety amidst a hail of enemy fire. His unwavering courage and selflessness saved the lives of more than twenty Marines and earned him the nation’s highest military honor.

Following his illustrious military career, Sgt. Maj. Canley settled in Oxnard, California, where he continued to embody the values of service and sacrifice. His passing on May 11, 2022, marked the end of a remarkable chapter in American military history, but his legacy of courage and heroism lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

As the USS John L. Canley embarks on its maiden voyage, it carries with it the spirit of Sgt. Maj. John Canley – a beacon of inspiration and a symbol of unwavering commitment to duty. May its journey be guided by the same courage and determination that defined the life of its namesake, and may it serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of America’s finest.

Milan 2024

In a remarkable display of unity and maritime prowess, the Indian Navy has launched the largest-ever multilateral naval exercise, Milan 2024, in the port city of Visakhapatnam. This unprecedented event brings together navies from around the world, including the United States, Iran, Russia, and 47 other countries, in a collective effort to bolster regional cooperation and enhance maritime security.

From February 19 to 23, the Harbour Phase of Milan 2024 commenced with a vibrant array of activities, including an international city parade on RK Beach, a maritime seminar, a tech expo, and various sporting events. These engagements provide an invaluable opportunity for participating navies to exchange ideas, foster interoperability, and strengthen bonds of friendship.

The highlight of the Harbour Phase is the inauguration of the Milan Village by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on February 21, followed by the International City Parade program attended by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar on February 22. However, amidst the celebrations, city police have imposed traffic restrictions and diversions to ensure the safety and security of all participants and spectators.

As Milan 2024 transitions into the Sea Phase from February 24 to 27, participating navies will embark on a series of advanced air defense, anti-submarine, and anti-surface warfare drills. These exercises, which include gunnery shoots on aerial and surface targets, maneuvers, and underway replenishment, demonstrate the collective resolve of nations to confront evolving security challenges in the maritime domain.

The Indian Navy’s role in Milan 2024 is pivotal, with nearly 20 ships, including the indigenously built aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, participating alongside nearly 50 aircraft, including MiG 29K, Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, and P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. This impressive display of naval power underscores India’s growing strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific region and reinforces its commitment to regional stability and security.

Milan 2024 represents more than just a naval exercise; it is a testament to the collective determination of nations to promote peace and prosperity through maritime cooperation. As Indian Navy spokesperson Vivek Madhwal aptly states, Milan 2024 aims to strengthen regional cooperation, foster interoperability, and provide a platform for sharing best practices and expertise.

As we witness the unfolding of Milan 2024, let us pause to appreciate the selfless service and dedication of our service members, whose unwavering commitment to duty ensures the safety and security of our seas. Their courage and valor serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us of the importance of unity and cooperation in the face of shared challenges.
