Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of John J. Kozar Sr., born on April 22, 1921, in New York City. John’s impact on the lives of his family, friends, and community is a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift those who remember him.
John’s life was a testament to bravery, service, and devotion. As a proud member of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, he served with distinction in the Pacific Theater, including the historic First Marine Landing at Guadalcanal. His experiences in the Marine Corps created lifelong friendships, and the motto “Semper Fi” became more than a phrase—it was a guiding principle throughout his life.

After his honorable service, John built a distinguished career as a master carpenter with Emerson Industries, where his craftsmanship left its mark across Connecticut, Cape Cod, and New York. Even in retirement, he remained a constant source of help and expertise to anyone in need, his generosity touching the hearts of many.
John was a devoted family man. He shared a deep, lasting love with his wife Celeste, who passed away in 2006, and he was a proud father to John J. Kozar Jr. and Donna K. Sullivan. His role as a grandfather to Jesse John Kozar brought him immense joy, and his family, extended family, and the Norwalk community were fortunate to experience his warmth and care.
On this special day, we remember John’s incredible life—a life of resilience, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his loved ones. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and as we honor his memory, we are reminded to live by the same values of loyalty, love, and service that he exemplified. Happy Birthday, John. Your spirit will forever guide us.
