Celebrating the Birthday of Navy Veteran William H. Flynn Jr., Honored in Connecticut

Today, we celebrate the birthday of William Henry Flynn, Jr.—a devoted father, proud U.S. Navy veteran, and longtime Connecticut resident—who was born on March 16, 1937, in Beverly, Massachusetts. Bill’s life was one of service, dedication, and quiet strength, and though he passed away on December 17, 2021, his legacy continues to be honored by all who knew him.

Raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Bill graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1954, where he was known for his intelligence, discipline, and deep love for his community. He spent his early years working at his family’s store, Bill’s Variety, located on Lebanon Avenue—a place that sparked many fond memories he carried with him throughout his life.

Shortly after high school, Bill answered his nation’s call by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. From 1954 to 1958, he served as a radioman aboard the USS Antietam, the Navy’s first angled-deck aircraft carrier. His time aboard the Essex-class vessel took him across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific, and included vital antisubmarine operations in the years following the Korean War. He was also stationed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland—an assignment that remained one of the many proud chapters of his military journey.

After his honorable service, Bill utilized the GI Bill to pursue higher education and earned his degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1965. He married and started a family while building a career in the aircraft manufacturing industry, working for many years at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Bill eventually retired and became a snowbird, enjoying time between Portland, Maine and Jupiter, Florida. In his later years, he settled in Raleigh, North Carolina to be near his eldest daughter. A devoted sports fan, he never missed a Red Sox or Patriots game, and his love of books, movies, and music remained a cornerstone of his daily life.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Kris Flynn of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Melissa “Kiki” Flynn of Saginaw, Michigan; and by his three grandchildren, Garrett, Rosemary, and William. He also leaves behind his nephews and nieces—Michael, Kathy, Tommy, and Tim Ryan—children of his late sister, Maureen LaValley, who affectionately called him “Uncle Bundy.”

Bill was predeceased by his parents, William H. Flynn, Sr. and Verna Celestine Lovett Flynn, as well as his sister Maureen. His ashes were laid to rest beside his mother in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
