Joseph A. Heller, Jr. was born on January 24, 1937, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Joseph Heller, Sr., and Ruth Marion (Clock). He passed away on September 8, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of service, humor, and vibrant memories. A proud Navy veteran, devoted husband, loving father, and cherished member of his community, Joe’s life was one of dedication and unparalleled individuality.

Early Life and Family
Joe’s formative years were shaped by the challenges of the Great Depression, fostering a lifelong resourcefulness and wit. As the eldest of five siblings, he navigated his role with equal measures of mischief and leadership. He shared an unbreakable bond with his brother, Bob, often partnering in childhood pranks, while his younger siblings—Pat, Dick, and Kathy—were frequently on the receiving end of his playful antics.

Service and Career
Joe’s sense of adventure and duty led him to enlist in the Navy, where he served honorably as a Construction Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class with the Seabees in Bermuda. Following his military service, Joe returned to Connecticut, embarking on a career that blended his skills and ingenuity. At Cheeseborough-Ponds, he contributed to the development of one of their first cosmetics lines, a role that showcased his creative and scientific aptitude.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Joe dedicated himself to his community as a town constable, volunteer firefighter, ambulance association member, and snowplow operator. He also held a special place among the Antique Veterans organization, proudly honoring his service and those of his fellow veterans.

Family Life
In the midst of his many roles, Joe found the love of his life, Irene. Their marriage of over six decades was a testament to their deep connection and shared humor. Together, they raised three daughters—Michelle, Lisette, and Monique—instilling in them resilience, compassion, and an appreciation for life’s lighter moments.

Joe’s dedication to his family extended to his grandchildren, with whom he shared countless moments of joy and laughter. As “Papa” and “Grampa Joe,” he delighted in their company, leaving them with cherished memories of his unique sense of humor and boundless affection.

A Life of Humor and Generosity
Joe’s personality was as colorful as the costumes his wife Irene lovingly created for his escapades. From his years as Essex’s “Dawg Kecher,” finding homes for stray animals, to his knack for treasure hunting at the Essex Dump, Joe’s life was a celebration of the unconventional. His unwavering kindness extended to both people and animals, reflecting his belief in finding the good in every soul.

Legacy
Joseph Heller, Jr.’s passing marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and the community he served. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene, and his brother, Bobby, he leaves behind a family enriched by his life lessons and laughter. His daughters, grandchildren, siblings, and many nieces and nephews will carry forward his memory, each with their own “Joe story” to tell.

Honoring His Memory
Joe was laid to rest with full military honors on September 13, 2019, at Centerbrook Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a life of service and dedication. In his honor, the family suggests donations to the Seabee Memorial Scholarship Association, ensuring that his legacy of support and commitment endures.

As we reflect on Joe’s extraordinary life, we are reminded of his words, humor, and the indelible mark he left on all who knew him. A celebration of his life was held with love, laughter, and a light meal, just as Joe would have wanted. His family encourages all to share a cup of coffee, swap stories, or commit a harmless prank in his memory—because that’s what Joe would do.
