As we honor the birthday of Jack W. Cunningham, born on August 26, 1941, in Barlow, OH, we reflect on the remarkable life he led and the legacy he left behind. Jack’s journey, marked by dedication, warmth, and an indomitable spirit, touched the hearts of many. Raised in a small town by his parents, Ralph and Isabelle (Montgomery) Cunningham, Jack’s early years instilled in him the values of hard work, loyalty, and the importance of community.

A proud graduate of Warren High School in 1960, Jack demonstrated immense pride and patriotism by serving in the U.S. Navy. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was stationed on the USS Gearing DD 710, a vessel at the forefront of naval encounters with Russian ships. This critical moment in history showcased his bravery and commitment to his country. His naval service also led to a pivotal moment in his personal life when he met Grover Gilbert, who later introduced Jack to his sister, Millie. Jack and Millie (Gilbert) Cunningham’s love story began with their marriage on Halloween in 1964. This year, they would have celebrated their diamond anniversary, marking 60 years of unwavering partnership and mutual support.

Jack’s professional career was dedicated to the Tool & Die industry, where his precision and expertise were highly valued. His passions, however, extended far beyond his work. An avid hunter in his early years, Jack later shifted his focus to coaching little league, demonstrating his belief in nurturing the next generation. His competitive spirit lived on as he played softball for the Hartley Hustlers. A member of the Thomaston Fish & Game Club, Jack also found joy in gardening, visiting casinos, and dining out. Known for his infectious sense of humor, he always had a joke ready. Yet, it was his profound love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that truly defined him.

Jack’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Millie; his son, Michael Cunningham and wife Diane; his daughter, Jacqueline Cunningham and her partner Charlie M. Sommerfelt; his brother, Randall Cunningham and wife Sue; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Jessica Acevedo (William) and Ronald Davis Jr. (Melissa), and his adored great-grandchildren, Anastacia and Savannah. He was a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews, a testament to his broad impact on those around him. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Bobby Cunningham.

Jack peacefully passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024, at his home in Torrington. Friends and family honored Jack’s life and legacy at Scott Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service and military honors at Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the American Lung Association in Jack’s memory, a cause close to his heart.

Jack’s departure leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his stories, his laughter, and his profound love for his family will forever remain a beacon of light. As we celebrate Jack W. Cunningham’s birthday, we honor a life well-lived, marked by service, devotion, and an endless capacity for joy.
