Major Raymond Gray Estelle II, a dedicated officer in the U.S. Air Force, was born on January 16, 1971, in New Haven, Connecticut. With a career spanning over two decades, Major Estelle served his nation with distinction, embodying the values of loyalty, courage, and selflessness.
Enlisting in October 1989 as an aerospace ground equipment technician, he spent his early years stationed at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico. While there, he achieved a bachelor’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, culminating in his commission as a second lieutenant in December 1998. His commitment to professional excellence led him to serve in cyberspace operations, with assignments including Langley Air Force Base in Virginia and multiple tours in Afghanistan.
Major Estelle’s unwavering devotion extended beyond his military duties. A man of faith and family, he was celebrated for his charisma, compassion, and boundless enthusiasm. He mentored countless individuals and led Bible studies, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. His mother, Regina Estelle, poignantly described him as a hero who deeply loved the military and the work he was doing.
Tragically, Major Estelle was killed in action on April 27, 2011, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Only a day after returning from spending Easter with his family, an Afghan officer opened fire in the air command and control center, taking his life and the lives of eight fellow air advisors.
Posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, Major Estelle’s sacrifice and valor are forever etched in history. His funeral at Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon, Florida, was a solemn occasion filled with heartfelt tributes from friends and colleagues who remembered him as a man of profound love, compassion, and commitment.
He is survived by his wife of ten years, Major N’Keiba Estelle, and their two children, Shayla and Raymond III. As a devoted husband, father, mentor, and patriot, Major Estelle’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
May we forever honor and remember the life, service, and sacrifice of Major Raymond Gray Estelle II.
