John “Jack” Francis O’Neill, beloved husband of Julia Anne Sayers O’Neill, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2021, at the age of 81, after a lifetime of service and commitment to his family, faith, and community. Born on January 11, 1940, Jack was raised in Hartford’s Dutch Point Colony, a place that shaped his resilience and character, where he and his siblings became known as “The Five Fighting O’Neills.” Jack carried the lessons learned from his upbringing throughout his life, embracing every challenge with determination and heart.

A graduate of Bulkeley High School in 1958, Jack’s peers recognized his leadership and warmth, traits that would define him throughout his life. His belief in seizing every opportunity led him through five meaningful careers, each deepening his understanding of humanity and his desire to help others. From his early years with the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department to his work with the Department of Correction, Jack made it his mission to support and uplift those around him.

Jack proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander over 45 years of service. He commanded two Port Security Units and served as an aide-de-camp to four Connecticut governors, all while embodying the values of honor, integrity, and duty. His dedication to service earned him widespread respect and admiration.

In addition to his professional achievements, Jack’s passion for education was evident in his numerous academic pursuits. With degrees from the University of New Hampshire, Indiana University, and St. Joseph College, among others, he remained a lifelong learner. His commitment to moral and theological studies at Holy Apostles College and Seminary was especially meaningful, reflecting his deep faith and desire to grow spiritually.

Jack’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He cherished every moment spent with his beloved wife, Julie, his “Rose of Tralee,” and their children and grandchildren. His love and pride for his family were the foundation of his life, and he often credited Julie for being his guiding light and constant source of encouragement.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service. He is survived by his devoted wife, Julia Anne O’Neill; his children, Colonel (Ret.) Vincent O’Neill and his wife Leslie, Attorney John F. X. O’Neill, and Eileen Mary O’Neill; his grandchildren, Katherine Anne and Patrick James; his siblings, Rev. Dr. Vincent de Paul O’Neill, Mary Ann Parlapiano, and Regis O’Neill-Welsh; and many extended family members and dear friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Margaret Mary Wallace, and other loved ones who preceded him in death.

Jack’s life was a testament to the power of faith, love, and perseverance. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A wake was held on November 1, 2021, at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Mark the Evangelist Church. Jack was laid to rest at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery. Memorial donations in his honor can be made to Father Luis Antonio Luna Barrera (MSA) at Holy Apostles College and Seminary.

Jack O’Neill’s life was one of profound impact, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the communities he served.
