Saluting Courage:
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Deployed Service Members

RED Friday Update – January 12, 2024
In honor of our deployed troops, we bring you the latest developments in the Middle East affecting the brave men and women serving in the region.
Increased Attacks on US Military Bases:
Since mid-October, US military bases in Syria and Iraq have faced 127 attacks by regional militants. Recently, nine attacks occurred since January 4, with 52 in Iraq and 75 in Syria.
Israeli-Hamas Conflict Impact:
Following Israel’s campaign against Hamas in Gaza, US bases became targets for regional militant groups expressing solidarity with Palestinians.
Ongoing Threats and Attacks:
Despite warnings from armed groups, the US continues its support to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), leading to heightened tensions and increased attacks on US bases.
Situation in Syria:
The US al-Omar oil field base in Syria’s Deir Ezzor governate faced a massive rocket attack today. Attacks by Iran-based militant groups persist, but US troops successfully repelled recent assaults in Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor.
Escalation Beyond Israel-Hamas Conflict:
Experts warn that incidents in the region could escalate the Israel-Hamas conflict into a broader regional struggle. Recent US strikes in Baghdad and clashes with Iran-backed militias contribute to the escalating tension.
Houthi Attacks in the Red Sea:
Iran-backed Houthi militias from Yemen targeted commercial vessels. US and UK warships repelled the “largest-ever” attack, destroying 21 drones and missiles in the Red Sea. Sea Viper missiles were deployed to protect the warships.
HMS Diamond’s Successful Defense:
HMS Diamond, alongside US warships, successfully repelled the attack with Sea Viper missiles, preventing injuries or damage. The Houthis claim retaliation against Israel for its Gaza operation.
As we honor our troops serving in challenging conditions, we stay vigilant and supportive of their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
