**Remembering SSGT Joseph Arthur Heneghan: A Cherished WWII Veteran and Devoted Family Man**
Staff Sergeant Joseph Arthur Heneghan, a revered World War II veteran and respected community member, passed away on November 25, 2009, at the age of 88. Born on May 2, 1921, in Trumbull, Connecticut, Joseph’s life was marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his work.
Joseph entered the world during a time of great global change, yet his commitment to his nation defined his early years. During World War II, he served with distinction in the European theater, where his courage and resolve contributed to the Allied efforts. His wartime service was a source of great pride and was honored throughout his life, particularly in his active involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
After the war, Joseph returned to Connecticut and embarked on a notable career in construction. As a skilled large crane operator, he was a long-standing member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 478, where his expertise and work ethic were highly valued. His professional life was as robust as his military service, marked by dedication and excellence.
On April 19, 1952, Joseph married Ann Marie Sullivan, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership and a family that would grow to include ten children: Joseph Jr., Kathleen, Thomas, Michael, Marguerite, Kevin, Joanne, Maureen, Timothy, and Mary. His family was his pride and joy, and he was affectionately known as “Poppy” to his 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, a testament to his loving and nurturing spirit.
Joseph’s legacy is also carried on by his surviving siblings, Mary Smith and Bertha Kiernan, who, along with his large family, mourned his loss but celebrated the full life he led. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 2, with Joseph being laid to rest with honors at Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to his family and his country.
SSGT Joseph Arthur Heneghan’s life story is a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of service, both military and personal. He remains a symbol of the Greatest Generation’s sacrifice and commitment. His contributions to his country in wartime and his devotion to his family and community in peace will be remembered and honored by all who knew him.
