In loving memory of U.S. Army Specialist Philip C. S. Schiller, born on February 18, 1991, in Hartford, Connecticut. His courageous journey ended tragically on April 11, 2012, while serving his country in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Philip, affectionately known as Phil, spent his formative years in Connecticut before moving to The Colony, Texas, where he graduated from The Colony High School in 2010, actively participating in the ROTC program.
Enlisting in the Army in 2009, Phil underwent rigorous training, completing Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and obtaining Military Occupational Specialty 11B, Infantryman, in 2010. Displaying exceptional dedication, he also completed the Combat Lifesavers Course in 2011. This marked his first deployment to Afghanistan, a testament to his unwavering commitment to serving his nation.
Phil’s character extended beyond his military service; he was remembered by neighbors as a kind-hearted individual who strived to uphold a high moral code. His sister, Courtney, cherished him as her closest companion, describing him as someone who always sought to aid others. Phil’s father, Erik, recalls his son’s sense of duty, evident even in his final moments. Despite sustaining mortal wounds from enemy fire, Phil valiantly continued to provide cover for his fellow soldiers, protecting them with unwavering bravery.
Philip’s sacrifices were honored with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge, among other awards. His impact reverberated throughout his community, with Governor Dannel P. Malloy acknowledging his heroism and expressing condolences to his family. Though Philip’s physical presence may be lost, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
