Today, we celebrate the birthday of Herbert A. Rubenstein, born on October 25, 1926, in New Britain, Connecticut. Though he passed away in 2019, his memory lives on through his remarkable life and the impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Herbert’s life was defined by service, innovation, and a deep love for his family. After graduating high school in 1944, he pursued his passion for electronics at Alfred University in New York before answering the call of duty. Drafted into the U.S. Army, Herbert was deployed to Hawaii, Quadraline, Wetauck Island, and Okinawa in June 1945. His service to his country shaped his life and remained a proud part of his legacy.
Upon his return from military service, Herbert’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to build a successful career. He initially worked alongside his father at Connecticut Furriers but eventually followed his passion by founding “American Electronics.” Later, his business became “Herbert Electronics,” a trusted name on Capital Avenue in Hartford for over 30 years. Even after retiring, Herbert continued to serve his loyal customers from his home, never losing his enthusiasm for electronics.
Herbert was more than just a talented businessman. He was a loving husband to his wife, Lynn, for 49 years and a devoted father to his daughter, Marla. Known for his kindness, gentle demeanor, and endless curiosity, Herbert filled his days with activities that brought him joy. Whether attending tag sales, gardening, riding his bike along the beach in Old Lyme, or enjoying sweets, Herbert embraced life fully. He loved classical music, jazz, and big band tunes, and never missed an episode of “Jeopardy,” where he delighted in answering questions correctly.
Herbert’s love for animals was also well known. He had a special place in his heart for every cat and dog he met, showing the same warmth to animals that he did to people. His generosity extended to his community, where he volunteered at Auction It Today in Berlin, earning the admiration and affection of all those he worked with.
On this day, as we remember Herbert, we honor the many ways he touched the lives of others. His legacy continues through his family, including his wife, Lynn, his daughter, Marla, his nephews Jeffrey and Curtis Widem, and many other relatives and friends. His kindness, dedication, and love remain in their hearts and the hearts of everyone whose life he enriched.
As we celebrate Herbert’s birthday, we remember him with gratitude and joy, knowing that his spirit lives on through the countless memories he created. Happy Birthday, Herbert A. Rubenstein—you will never be forgotten.
