Captain Anthony George Fusco, a remarkable soldier and cherished family man, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 28 on May 14, 2013, in El Paso, Texas. His sudden departure leaves behind a legacy of exceptional leadership and heartfelt community service.
Born on January 24, 1985, in Watertown, Captain Fusco demonstrated early on a natural aptitude for leadership and athleticism. A 2004 graduate of Watertown High School, he captained both the football and track teams, earning the title of Watertown’s Most Valuable Player in 2003. His academic and athletic prowess secured him a place in the National Honor Society and a National Football Scholar Athlete selection in 2003.
Captain Fusco’s commitment to excellence continued at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was the captain of the Army Football Team and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in 2008. His military career commenced as he was commissioned as a 2LT in the Air Defense Artillery, followed by his role as an athletic intern with the West Point Football Team.
In 2010, Captain Fusco was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery. His military service took him to Bahrain in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from May 2011 through January 2012. His exemplary performance earned him the Army Commendation Award (1 OLC), the Army Achievement Award (1 OLC), and several other prestigious decorations, reflecting his dedication and skill in serving his country.
Beyond his military achievements, Captain Fusco was an active member of the Oakville VFW Post 7330, showing his commitment to fellow veterans and his community. His roles as Assistant Operations Officer and Battery Executive Officer highlighted his leadership capabilities and his ability to inspire those around him.
Captain Fusco is survived by a loving family: his wife Franziska (Gerber) Fusco, his parents Kathy and William Moher of Watertown, and George and Lisa Fusco of Cape Cod. His international family includes his mother-in-law Anna and her husband Bruno Zaehner of Zurich, Switzerland, and father-in-law Beat Gerber of Bern, Switzerland. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Roman Gerber, grandparents George and Elaine Zonas, Norma Moher, his sister Kristine Fusco, a nephew, two nieces, and numerous relatives who will remember him fondly for his warmth, courage, and generous spirit.
Captain Anthony George Fusco’s life was one of noteworthy achievement and altruistic service. His story is not just one of a soldier, but of a community leader and a devoted family man whose impact will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. Captain Fusco’s dedication to his country and his community sets a lasting example for all who strive to make a difference in the world.
