Today, we celebrate the life of John Sosik, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, whose legacy of patriotism, service, and dedication to his family and community continues to inspire those who knew him.
Born in Bridgeport to Joseph and Olga Sosik, John was a proud graduate of Bullard Havens, where he was part of the school’s state championship basketball team. His love for his country led him to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, a time that shaped his lifelong commitment to supporting fellow veterans.
John’s passion for veterans’ causes was evident throughout his life. He spent countless hours visiting the Veterans Affairs Hospital, volunteering with the American Legion, and distributing red poppies to honor fallen soldiers. As the former commander of the Shelton VFW Post 1236, he dedicated himself to advocating for veterans and their families.
In addition to his service, John was a fixture in the Shelton and West Haven communities. He found joy in staying active, especially through daily bocce games at the West Haven boardwalk, where he made lifelong friendships. John’s commitment to fitness and staying engaged in life was a testament to his vitality and energy.
John’s career spanned many years, including a rewarding time at Perkin Elmer and CBS Labs, where he took pride in the company’s involvement in the development of the Hubbell and Copernicus telescopes. His dedication to his work was matched only by his love for his family.
John’s memory lives on in his children, Wayne Sosik and his wife, Cheryl, of Stratford, and Rhonda Sosik of Shelton, as well as his three grandchildren, Ryan, Jake, and Emily. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dorothy Kollar, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Ellie. He was predeceased by his wife, MaryEllen, his sister, Tanya Sosik, and his brothers, Nicholas and Alexander Sosik.
Though John is no longer with us, his legacy of service, love, and devotion continues to be felt by all who were touched by his life. Today, we remember him with love and gratitude as we celebrate his birthday.
