Today, we remember and celebrate the life of Thomas Joaquim Borges, who was born on August 10, 1947, in Norwalk, CT. As we commemorate what would have been his 77th birthday, we reflect on a life marked by service, craftsmanship, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Tom Borges, who passed away on February 13, 2014, at the age of 66, was a beloved husband to Gloria (Gray) Borges and a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Raised in a loving family, Tom was the son of Joseph and Leduina (Carvalho) Borges. His journey began in Norwalk and took him through a lifetime of accomplishments and contributions.

Tom’s dedication to service was evident from his early years. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, embodying the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice. After his military service, Tom applied his skills as a sheet-metal smith and later became a master carpenter. His craftsmanship was renowned throughout Fairfield County, where he built custom homes and provided detailed finish work that left a lasting impression.

One of Tom’s notable professional achievements was his work at Stew Leonard’s, where he spent over a decade designing and building counters and display cases. His creative and meticulous approach to his work earned him respect and admiration.

From 1971 to 1978, Tom and his wife Gloria operated “The Tackle Box” bait shop in East Norwalk, CT, catering to the local fishing community. An avid fisherman himself, Tom served as the past President of the Norwalk Striped Bass Club, where he shared his passion for the sport with others.

Tom’s commitment to his community extended beyond his professional life. He was actively involved in the Wilton Red Cross Center, serving as a First Aid instructor and a Red Cross Gallon Blood Donor. His dedication to helping others was a hallmark of his character.

In his leisure time, Tom enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes with the Fly R C Club in Southbury, CT. This hobby was a reflection of his love for creativity and his desire to bring joy to those around him.

Tom’s family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gloria; three daughters, Renae Simon of Titusville, FL, Jennifer Smith of Bristol, CT, and Christina Lee of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Armand Borges of Norwalk, CT; and two sisters, his twin, Delores Manca of Danbury, CT, and Leonora Montanye of Waterbury, CT. He was predeceased by his older brothers, Servio Borges of Norwalk, CT, and Acasio Borges of Redding, CT. Tom is also survived by several nieces, nephews, their children, and grandchildren.

As we celebrate Tom’s birthday, we remember the impact he had on all who knew him. His legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love for his family continues to inspire us. Thomas Joaquim Borges’s life was a testament to dedication and selflessness, and his memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
