United States Marine Corps Corporal Stephen R. Bixler – Suffield, Connecticut

Stephen Richard Bixler was born August 17, 1985, in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Suffield, where he grew up with a passion for the outdoors, athletics, and service to others. At Suffield High School, he distinguished himself as a standout athlete on the cross‑country and track teams and pursued outdoor interests like snowboarding and surfing — activities that reflected his energetic spirit and love of challenge. His peers remembered him as thoughtful, focused, and quietly determined, qualities that carried forward into every chapter of his life.

Beyond athletics, Stephen was deeply involved in community leadership and service. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a distinction earned through years of dedication, leadership, and effort on behalf of others. The discipline and commitment that brought him to Eagle Scout would continue to shape his approach to life and service in the Marine Corps.

Shortly after graduating from high school in 2003, Stephen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, answering the call to serve his country with honor. He completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, and the School of Infantry, earning his infantry designation. He was initially assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, and deployed to both Haiti and Iraq early in his career.

Cpl. Bixler’s commitment to service and willingness to lead distinguished his Corps career. He volunteered for selection to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, a role that required exceptional skill and courage. His commanders and fellow Marines regarded him as a reliable and unselfish leader, respected for his tactical proficiency and calm presence under pressure.

During his second tour of duty in Iraq, Stephen’s unit operated in Al Anbar Province, one of the most dangerous regions of the country, conducting foot patrols to locate and neutralize threats to fellow service members and Iraqi civilians. On May 4, 2006, while on foot patrol, he identified a threat to his unit and warned others, allowing them to avoid the hazard. As he continued forward to clear the route, an improvised explosive device detonated and he lost his life while serving at 20 years old. His actions reflected deep selflessness and a commitment to the safety of his fellow Marines.

Cpl. Bixler’s awards and decorations reflect his bravery and dedication. They include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon with gold star in lieu of a second award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with bronze star in lieu of a second award — honors that attest to his valor and sustained commitment to service.

Stephen’s funeral was held at Sacred Heart Church in Suffield, where family, friends, and community members gathered to honor his life and service. Per his wishes, he was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, among fellow Marines and service members who also made the ultimate sacrifice. Flags were lowered at half‑staff across Connecticut in recognition of his service.

To honor his memory and ensure his legacy endures, the Suffield Post Office was renamed the “Corporal Stephen R. Bixler Post Office” through federal legislation, and a portion of Route 190 East in Suffield was designated as the “Corporal Stephen R. Bixler Memorial Highway.” These lasting tributes reflect the deep respect his hometown holds for his sacrifice and the example he set through his service.

Cpl. Bixler was survived by his parents, Richard and Linda Bixler, and his twin sister Sandra L. Bixler, all of whom, along with extended family and friends, continue to honor his memory and the profound example he set through his life and service.
