Honoring Our Heroes: The History and Significance of National Vietnam War Veterans Day
National Vietnam War Veterans Day, observed annually on March 29, stands as a profound tribute to the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War. This day not only acknowledges their service and sacrifices but also seeks to rectify the nation’s collective failure to honor them properly upon their return.
Establishment of National Vietnam War Veterans Day
The journey to formally recognize Vietnam veterans began decades after the war’s end. On March 29, 1973, the United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), was disbanded, and the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam, marking a pivotal moment in the war’s conclusion. However, it wasn’t until March 28, 2017, that President Donald J. Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act into law, officially designating March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This act also encourages the display of the U.S. flag on this day to honor those who served.
The Vietnam War Commemoration
In addition to establishing this day of recognition, efforts have been made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Authorized by Congress in 2008 and launched by President Barack Obama on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration aims to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. This national initiative continues through Veterans Day, November 11, 2025, ensuring that the contributions of these veterans are remembered and appreciated.
Recognizing Past Injustices
The Vietnam War era was marked by deep societal divisions and widespread opposition to the conflict. Regrettably, many returning veterans faced hostility, neglect, and a lack of appreciation for their service. National Vietnam War Veterans Day serves as an opportunity to address this historical wrong, offering a heartfelt “welcome home” to those who were denied it decades ago. It’s a day to express our collective gratitude and to acknowledge the sacrifices made by these individuals, including the wounded, those who were taken as prisoners of war, those who remain missing in action, and the fallen.
Honoring All Who Served
This day is dedicated to all who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of their duty location. This inclusive recognition ensures that every individual’s contribution is honored, reflecting the diverse roles undertaken during the Vietnam War.
National Observances and Community Engagement
Communities across the nation observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day through various programs, ceremonies, and activities. These events provide platforms for veterans and their families to share their experiences and for the public to express their appreciation. For instance, the Department of Veterans Affairs marks this day by saluting the millions of living Vietnam veterans and their families, acknowledging their enduring legacy and contributions.
A Heartfelt Tribute
As a nation, we must confront the uncomfortable truth of how Vietnam veterans were treated upon their return. The neglect and mistreatment they endured remain a national disgrace that cannot be forgotten or forgiven. National Vietnam War Veterans Day is a step toward healing these wounds, offering overdue recognition and gratitude. It’s a day to honor the courage, resilience, and dedication of all Vietnam veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices are neither overlooked nor underestimated.
To all Vietnam veterans: we thank you, we honor you, and we welcome you home.
