Fred D. Carlage, who lived to the remarkable age of 101, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2018. He was the cherished husband of the late Esther (Conley) Carlage and a beloved figure to many. Born on November 19, 1916, in Union, Connecticut, Fred was the son of John and Sophie (Smolen) Carlage.

A proud graduate of Putnam High School, Fred furthered his education at Rhode Island College and the OSHA Institute in Chicago, Illinois. His journey in service began with the Army, where he served for 4 ½ years during World War II. Initially assigned to the 191st Tank Battalion, Fred was later transferred to the Air Force. He excelled as a Flight Navigator, receiving dual commissions as both a navigator and a bombardier. Stationed in Australia with the 5th Air Force, 380th Bomb Group, he bravely flew 47 combat missions, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

After the war, Fred settled in Woodstock, Connecticut, where his passion for music flourished. He played the saxophone and clarinet in various bands, most notably with the Four Aces. His dedication to community was evident through his lifetime membership in the American Legion and his active participation as a communicant at Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret.

Fred was also known for his unwavering support of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. In his youth, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his son Bruce Carlage and wife Michele; daughter Sharon Wojcik and companion Michael Staples; son Dean Carlage and wife Debra; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Frank, Marie Bednarz, and Elsie Ruda.

A calling hour was held on June 6, 2018, at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home in Putnam, Connecticut, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Church of the Visitation. Fred was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery with Military Honors, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to service, family, and community.

Fred D. Carlage will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a loving husband, devoted father, and steadfast friend. His legacy of courage, musical talent, and family devotion continues to inspire those who carry his memory.
