Army Lt. Col. Michael J. McMahon, 41, of West Hartford, Connecticut, made the ultimate sacrifice on November 27, 2004, while serving his country during Operation Enduring Freedom. Tragically, he lost his life when the aircraft he was aboard crashed in Bamian, Afghanistan, claiming the lives of two other brave soldiers: Chief Warrant Officer Travis W. Grogan and Specialist Harley D. Miller.

Born on October 23, 1963, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Michael was raised in West Hartford, the son of retired Lt. Col. Dennis McMahon and Elizabeth McMahon. He graduated from Conard High School in 1981 before pursuing higher education at the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1985. Commissioned in the aviation branch, Michael exemplified dedication and leadership throughout his military career.

Michael became the leader of the 3rd Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry, stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii in June 2003. He commanded Task Force Saber in Afghanistan, overseeing efforts in the western provinces, where his troops were responsible for supporting provincial reconstruction teams in cities like Herat and Farah. His commitment to his soldiers was unwavering; his sister, Nora Boyer, reflected on their conversations, stating, “Between him and me, it was always, ‘Mike, are you having the time of your life?’ And he’d say, ‘Yep, Nora, I’m having the time of my life.’” This sentiment exemplified his passion for service and his love for his troops.

On that fateful day, Michael was traveling aboard a fixed-wing CASA 212 plane when it crashed in the challenging terrain of the Hindu Kush mountains. The search efforts faced considerable difficulties due to severe weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the remains of Michael and his fellow soldiers were eventually recovered and transported back to the United States.

Michael was remembered not only for his service but also for his dedication to family. He is survived by his wife, LTC Jeanette McMahon, and their three children, Michael Jr., Thomas, and Dennis IV. He was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Cook McMahon, and his brother, Dennis R. McMahon III. The McMahon family, including his father, LTC Dennis R. McMahon (Ret.) and stepmother, Dr. Melanie Crandall McMahon, along with his sisters Lezle, Nora, Kelly, and Stacie, carry on his legacy.

Michael J. McMahon’s commitment to his country and his family leaves an enduring impact on all who knew him. His life was marked by leadership, compassion, and bravery, and he will forever be honored as a true American hero. Internment took place at the Post Cemetery, where he rests alongside his brother, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to service and sacrifice.
