Next Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Veterans’ and Military Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing to discuss several key bills aimed at improving benefits and protections for Connecticut veterans. Among the most significant proposals is S.B. 1276, a bill designed to correct gaps in last year’s property tax exemption for veterans with a 100% permanent and total disability rating.

The original legislation, while well-intentioned, contained vague language that left certain property-related expenses uncovered. S.B. 1276 seeks to address these issues and ensure that disabled veterans receive the full exemption they were initially promised. The hearing will provide veterans, advocates, and the public an opportunity to voice their support or concerns regarding the bill.

Key Bills on the Agenda
The public hearing, scheduled for 11:30 AM in Room 1C of the Legislative Office Building (LOB) and accessible via Zoom, will address multiple bills impacting veterans. Notable legislation includes:
- S.B. 1276 – Expanding property tax exemptions for 100% disabled veterans and extending benefits to Gold Star spouses.
- S.B. 1150 – Granting no-cost driver’s license renewals for veterans.
- H.B. 5117 – Addressing oversight and improvements for the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery.
- S.B. 1277 – Promoting affordable housing options for disabled and elderly veterans.
- H.B. 6874 – Establishing protections against predatory practices targeting veterans’ benefits claims.

I am not a veteran. I am a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the United States Air Force Auxiliary. But in 1991, personal loss brought me to a place I never left.
Over two decades later, that loss led me to the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut, where I took on the coordination of Wreaths Across America — which grew into the largest and fastest growing veterans program in the state. I didn’t do it for recognition. I did it for them.
In 2016 I founded the Connecticut Veterans Bulletin. Not because I served, but because I believe those who did deserve to be honored, connected, and kept alive.
Twenty-two veterans die by suicide every day. I knew about that number before it became a hashtag. I knew it personally, long before anyone was talking about it.
This publication exists because that number is unacceptable. Because every veteran in Connecticut deserves to know someone gives a damn.
That someone is me.
