On April 17, we celebrate the life of U.S. Army Sergeant Edward J. Frank II, who was born on this day in 1985. Sgt. Frank’s life was marked by dedication, bravery, and an unwavering commitment to his country. Although his life was tragically cut short on August 11, 2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and honor his memory.

Sgt. Frank, known affectionately as Jeffrey to his family, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up in New York, attending local schools. Before his military service, he lived in Yonkers, New York, with his family. Jeffrey joined the U.S. Army in August 2005, driven by a profound sense of duty and a desire to protect his fellow citizens.

Throughout his military career, Sgt. Frank served with distinction. He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based out of Fort Drum, New York. His role as a squad leader demonstrated his leadership and dedication to his comrades. Jeffrey completed two tours in Iraq before his deployment to Afghanistan in March 2011, showcasing his steadfast commitment to his mission and his country.

Sgt. Frank’s service earned him numerous awards and decorations, including two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. These honors reflect his bravery, skill, and dedication to his duty.

Beyond his military accomplishments, Sgt. Frank was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Selena Frank, and their three children, Del’von, D’zhanee, and Dayvontay. His parents, Edward J. Frank and Sandra Brown, also cherish his memory. Sandra Brown recalls her son’s unwavering commitment to his role, saying, “This is something he loved to do. He said, ‘Mom, I’m not going to leave anybody behind.’ This is what he wanted.”

Jeffrey’s family and friends remember him not only as a dedicated soldier but also as a kind and loving person. His daughter D’zhanee fondly remembers him as “a very nice guy” who enjoyed playing with her and giving her piggyback rides. His family continues to draw strength from his memory, honoring his legacy of bravery and love.

On this day, as we commemorate Sgt. Edward J. Frank II’s birthday, we reflect on the profound impact he had on those around him. His service and sacrifice remain a testament to his character and dedication. His life, though brief, was filled with acts of courage, love, and selflessness that continue to inspire us all.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra have both honored Sgt. Frank’s memory, recognizing the significant loss felt by his family, friends, and community. Gov. Malloy stated, “We are mourning the loss of yet another one of Connecticut’s fallen heroes. These wars have taken a terrible toll on our military and their families, and they cast a long shadow over communities all across Connecticut. Our thoughts and our prayers are with those who are grieving for the brave men and women who have lost their lives in service to the nation, and our troops who are still overseas.”

As we celebrate Sgt. Edward J. Frank II’s birthday, we honor his life, his service, and his enduring legacy. His commitment to his family, his comrades, and his country serves as an enduring reminder of the true meaning of sacrifice and patriotism.
